Blessing of the Animals
August 25, 2007
Trinity Lutheran Church
Roselle, IL

The morning dawned with the sun shining! Two days before, the NW suburbs had a terrible rain that flooded many basements and downed many large trees. Even so, our animals had to be "blessed".

About 30 people with their dogs came for the annual blessing sponsored by Strays Halfway House. Pastor Matt Helfrich's talk quoted many passages from the Bible and told us stories concerning his two dogs. All of the participants put a hand on their furry friends and all repeated the Strays humble prayer:

Hear our Humble prayer oh God, for our friends - the animals
Especially for the animals that are suffering.
For all wistful creatures in captivity that beat against the bars.
For any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry.
For all that are in pain or dying, for all that must be put to death.
We entreat for them all thy mercy and pity and for those who deal with them,
We ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us ourselves to be true friends to animals and so to share the blessing of the Merciful
-Amen-

The 20 dogs that were there seemed to enjoy the blessing, especially the basset hound that howled the entire time!

Thanks to all that participated, we will see you again in 2008
